One day left at the countdown
[10 Feb 06]

Here we go. Tonight is gonna be the night of the Official Openings fot these two weeks of Winter Games. I'm glad to notice that this weblog (torino06) is having quite a good success in such a short time, despite of the silence of the national Media about it. While in tv -if you allow me to get into a short polemic- we can see almost only Government spots (and the face of Berlusconi), from the Big Works (?) -the so called Grandi Opere- to the simplified burocracy. Never heard of these things till now that we're close to the elections (next April the 9th).

Well, at one day from the Official Openings, let's take a break from the Electoral Campaign and dive together in this ocean of sports and enthusiasm that the Olimpics are!
(And for once fuck off to the No-Global who will interfer!)

Have fun!
[by perO - 9 Feb 06]

In generala I'm not really interested in the Olympic Games, in fact I'm not partecipating in any event related to Turin 2006, even tough I live in Turin; and not for any particular reason, just cause I'm not affected by the olympic spirit itself. But today I've been touched, I have to say. TOday the Flame passed by house, and seeind the "New Turin" on party, with the works finally finished, the people on the streets, the kids with the flags, the policemen smiling and chatting and the old men happy once in a lifetima, well it all made me change my mind. Or at least it made me understand wich "party" to be with
The Olimpiad's a big party, and I can't understand that somebody wants to stop it, that the protests are going on, or that other affairs (like the TAV, tha Coca Cola) are interfering with this celebration, just making polemics in any case. How can you stop such a great celebration? And today only I understand the opportunity that this Games are for my city, Turin, that can finally make the most of it and be a beatiful tourists place, and not only that "Fiat cars town".

The Olympic Games are a great party, let's enjoy it!

Miller says NO to the Olympic Village: "Uncomfortable beds, and not healthy"
[by WallyWest - 8 feb 06]

TURIN (Reuters) - "Failure for the olympic village", say most of the best athlets partecipating to the next Turin's Olympic.

The alpine skiing american champion Body Miller, one of the big favourites, choose to stay in the same Caravan he uses fot the World Cup.
"The village is not really suitable for an athlet's needs and well-being. The beds are small and uncomfortable" said the champion to the american Press. "I have a motor-caravan, with my food, my bed, my pillow. I'm quite indipendent.
I think that in such important competitions it's important not to change habits."
His teammate too, Daron Rahlves, who won 2 medals in the World Cup last year, has his own caravan, where he stays with his wife and his dog. "It's nice to be in a place where you feel at home" he said.
The austrian skier Rainer Schoenfelder saif is gonna spend the less time possible in the Sestrière Village. "I'll leave as soon as the Combined and the Super-G will end" wrote in his personal web site.
He said also that the Village's not right to prepare him. During the Olympiad people are sensitive, in every sense. It's like if you're fighting for your life. This kind of energy and place are not right to concentrate for the competitions."

"COLD AND DUSTY ROOM"

While Miller and Rahlves decide not to join the other thousands of athlets who are gonna live in the Village, other hardly adapt to the place.
The american skater Johnny Weir, even inside the atmosphere of the olympic Village, is not really satisfied of the Lingotto accomodations. "It's nice to be in the Olympic Village just cause it is the Olympic Village, but it's rough, and the room's cold and dusty.", said the american three times champion. "When it comes to traveling I'm like a princess, I like my comforts. I coughed for the dust."
The International Olympic Committee's President Jacques Rogge instead didin't find anything to blame in the accomodations. And durign the Games he'll sleep in the Village and not in luxurious hotels

Goog morning Gramellini
[by Frittole - 8 Feb]

It's ok the olympic Turin, it's ok that everything works perfectly, it's ok everything's cool, it's ok to laugh about it, it's even ok that it seems Zurich (would it ever be a compliment at all?), but if Gramellini really thinks that we need 365 days of Olympics to make everything work in Turin, well, let it make the Olympics in his house...Fifteen days's ok, one year would be suicide. To save some space I explain here why I don't feel represented by Gramellini.

[by kj - 7 Feb 06]
(Ansa) - Rome, 7th Feb - Three days from the Opening Ceremony and it is maximum alarm for the security at the Turin's Winter Olympics. At the Ceremony this friday will stand italian and foreign istitutions representatives, including Laura Bush with her daughter Barbara. The same day, for security reasons the airport Torino Caselle will be closed from 6.45 pm. From tomorrow on there'll be controls in the olympic venues (especially indoor) and in the metro.

It was obvious, i know, but it is sad.

We want the truth about Camilla Borsotti exclusion!
[by Kingzac - 7 Feb 06]

We didn't even have the time to enjoy the convocation of Camilla Borsotti, the young and all'round athlet (a rare quality for the italian women at the Olympics), that we had straight-away the cold shower. Camilla's been excluded! Annalisa Ceresa took her place.
In my opinion the reason can't be the tenth place that Ceresa obtained last sunday, specially in a competition like the giant slalom where the italian athlets are not so brilliant. That's why we ask to know the truth!
I think it's a scandal, you can't threat young athlets that way, first you give them great expectations then you exclude them. Shame! Shame! Shame!
I think we italians should feel ashamed not only for the continuous assaults to the Olimpyc Flame, but also for the managers of the women apline sliing team. Our athlets deserve respect! This is not a good behaviour!

Foreign affair
[by Ari - 5 Feb 06]

Hi there!

I’m in at the end of my Erasmus, in a few days I’ll be back in , so that I’ll catch the Turin’s Winter Olympics “wave of enthusiasm”. Sometimes I sneak up the newspapers to see if they say anything about this so important event: nothing at all.’s not certainly a Country of skiers –last Sunday, as soon at it snowed a bit, everything was stuck, highways and so on, and unbelievable jams- but to ignore completely the Olympic Games I think is too much. At the end it is Sport, and it doesn’t mean there are no Portuguese Athletes interested for the future. And more than that, I got to say that  the promotion by the Media’s been not that enthusiastic. Nobody knows that in the winter Olympics are about to begin.
I really have to go out with a sign round my neck!.

Who’s got the Olympics? Is it the people, or is it the sponsors?
[by Kingzac - 4 Feb 06]

I can’t accept that a restaurant in Turin has to write “During the Turin’s Event “ instead of “During the Olympics”! It’s against the Olympics philosophy. The Games are everybody’s not only somebody’s, and certainly they don’t belong only to those who put the money into it. It’s outrageous that you can’t express your own Culture just because Mc Donald’s paid and you area allowed say “Olympics” only inside those feeding-troughs .
And those fat and oily burgers have nothing to do with any Italian tradition whatsoever. It’s a scandal!
I love the Olympics, and these shames won’t touch me, but I understand the Olympic philosophy ‘s often betrayed, just and always on top of money reasons.

I wish everybody enjoys the Olympics, and I suggest to those who’ll be in Turin to try its wonderful restaurants, to forget burgers, we have any sort of food in Piemonte. In this Weblog we’ll talk also about where to find good food during the Games.
This post is due to a piece of Massimo Granellini in yesterday’s Stampa homepage: “I giochi proibiti” (The Forbidden Games).
